Julius John Lankes (1884 – 1960) was born in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from the Buffalo Commercial and Electro-Mechanical Institute in 1902, he worked as a draftsman. Lankes continued his art studies at the Art Students’ League of Buffalo and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. His work was primarily in woodcut and was heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement and by William Morris. Lankes was an illustrator, artist, author and college professor at Wells College in Aurora, New York. He illustrated works for many authors including Robert Frost, Sherwood Anderson and Beatrix Potter. Many museums and institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, have collected his prints.
