Daniel J. Murphy served in WWII as a member of the U.S. Navy. Enabled by the G.I. Bill, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA, where he was awarded the prestigious Cresson Travel Scholarship. His lithograph, “Chloe,” was chosen as the 1948 presentation print from the twenty-two eligible submissions to the 150th Anniversary of Lithography Show, sponsored jointly by the Print Club of Rochester and the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery.

The artist wrote of the print: “It was done at a little place called Sleepy Hollow in Pennsylvania. It was almost dark when I finished my sketch and started to make my way among the grave stones toward home. From the house which I included in my sketch, came the haunting strains of an old organ and the song Chloe. The silence of the oncoming night and stillness of the grave yard has stayed with me to this day.”
