Norman Bate (1916 – 1980) was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1916. He was a printmaker, illustrator and painter. Bate earned his BFA in Illustration at Pratt Institute of Arts, Brooklyn and his MFA at the University of Illinois in printmaking and painting. He returned to teach at Pratt Institute and later was an Associate Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology. In addition to his printmaking, he is widely known for the fine children’s books he has written and illustrated.
