Kernan writes: “The print is an intaglio from four copper plates. The plate making techniques I used were spit bite aquatint and sugar lift aquatint. The image for Sea Cleft #2 came from a field sketch done along the rocky coast in the west of Ireland. It is a leap of imagination set off by close examination of the seaweed and cracks in the rocks.”

Catherine Kernan ( 1949 – ) is a painter and printmaker. After receiving her BFA at Cooper Union, New York and her MFA at University of Wisconsin, she cofounded the Mixit Print Studios, in Somerville, Massachusetts. She is also the Director of Maud Morgan Arts, an art center in Cambridge. Since 1987, Kernan has taught at a variety of colleges and has offered many workshops in printmaking both nationally and internationally. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected.
