Kathryn Polk ( 1952 – ) studied painting at the Memphis Academy of Art and Memphis State University. In 2002, she began working with traditional stone lithography.
Artist’s statement: “Love creates change and forces us to make choices that lead us into unknown territories. My mother died June 9, 2016. She taught me a lot about survival and endurance. My lithographs depict metaphorical visual memories and thought through the eyes of all the women in my family.”
“Moving to Saturn” is a hand-printed edition combining stone and plate lithography.

Paper: Arches Crème Cover (the paper was calendared twice)
Registration: T and Bar
Drawing Materials: Korn’s Copal #5. Gum Arabic resist, snake slip, Korn’s Liquid Tusche
Litho Stone: Warm Grey (used for black “key” and counter etched for final tint color)
Stone Surface: grained with 80, 150, 220, 280 silicon carborundum grit
Color Plates: Polyester Plate
Ink: Graphic Chemical Shopmix #2244, Hanco W1075 Tintbase, Daniel Smith color inks
The color was printed in this order: black (key image), green tint (cacti), pink tint, beige tint. An acetate print was make of the black “key” and used for matching registration and drawings for 2 of the remaining colors. The stone was counter-etched and drawn back into for the final color run.
