Henry Mockel (1905 – 1981) born in Berlin, Germany, immigrated to the US in the early 1920s. He studied at the Grand School of Fine Arts in New York City. Mockel’s specialty was etching and woodblock printing. After a studio fire destroyed most of his work and equipment, he began creating serigraphs. In 1958, Henry moved to the Mojave Desert, CA, where he became interested in the flora and fauna. He spent 14 years studying and drawing these plants, which resulted in his book titled, “Mockel’s Desert Wildflower Notebook”. Henry Mockel’s work is well represented in many museums and institutions, including Cornell University and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.
